3 Ways to Improve Your Writing

Whether you're a pro or a beginner, there's always room to develop your writing skills.

And the best way to develop those skills is by practicing.

You wouldn’t expect to go from not running at all to running a marathon, would you?

In the same way, you won’t be able to go from writing little more than a few emails a day to cranking out several blog posts every week or finally writing that book you’ve been talking about for years.

If you want to get better at writing, commit to spending time writing every day.

We have a few ideas to help.

3 Ways to Improve Your Writing

Even the pros need to work on their writing skills. Here are our tried-and-true methods for improving our writing skills without banging our heads against the wall.

    Writing prompts

Writing prompts are fun ways to challenge yourself and get creative. It's an activity where you're given a topic as a starting point and create a story from it. You can find many prompts on the internet. Seriously, just Google “writing prompts,” and you’ll get hundreds of ideas. Work on whatever sounds the most interesting to you, and see where it goes!

Remember, there are no right or wrong answers. Nobody has to see what you’ve written, so feel free to get creative and even a little weird. Don’t worry about grammar, spelling, etc., for now. Just have fun writing and seeing where your mind takes you.

    Journal

You're never too old to keep a journal. It's good practice to write your thoughts in a notebook, especially if you’re the type of person whose brain can’t seem to shut down at night.

Spending 10 – 15 minutes writing in your journal before you go to bed can help you release all the anxious thoughts that would otherwise keep you up at night. Again, don’t worry about how your writing sounds. Nobody is going to read it besides you. You don’t even have to reread your writing if you don’t want to!

Let go of your expectations and write.

    Learn new vocabulary

Here’s a little secret about me. Thesaurus.com is probably my most visited website, after Gmail.

Coming up with new words is hard, especially when you’re in the groove. I often find myself repeating the same words over and over, then going back and updating them. So, this idea is as much for me as it is for you.

Channel your inner wordsmith and learn new vocabulary. Crack open a dictionary and discover a new word and its definition. Expanding your vocabulary is a great way to diversify your writing. It can get you away from filling your blog posts with industry jargon and buzzwords.
